Why manufacturer verification matters even more for switchgear
Switchgear is an assembled system built from multiple critical components — breakers, relays, busbars — wired and tested together. Unlike a simpler product where a trading company relabeling a factory’s output carries relatively contained risk, switchgear assembled by an unverified integrator using inconsistent component sourcing carries a much higher risk of coordination and reliability issues that may not surface until the equipment is in service.
How to verify factory vs assembler or trader
Ask for a factory video call showing the actual assembly and wiring process, not just a showroom or finished-product photo. Ask specific questions about in-house wiring and testing capability — a genuine manufacturer wires and tests switchgear on their own premises, while a trading company or basic assembler may outsource this critical step without full visibility into the process.
FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) process
This matters more for switchgear than almost any other equipment category. Ask specifically what the FAT process covers — dielectric testing, mechanical operation testing, wiring verification, and functional testing of protection relays should all be part of a proper FAT, not just a visual inspection. Ask whether third-party witness testing is available, and request sample FAT reports from previous, comparable orders.
Component sourcing transparency
A reputable switchgear manufacturer should be transparent about which brands of circuit breakers, protection relays, and other critical components they use, and should be willing to specify or discuss alternatives if your project has preferred component brands. Vague answers about component sourcing, or an unwillingness to name the actual breaker and relay manufacturers used, is worth treating as a caution flag.
Certifications and test reports

01 Is third-party witness testing always necessary?
Not for every project. Third-party witness testing is most valuable where the equipment is high-value, technically complex, mission critical or subject to strict consultant or utility requirements. Buyers should confirm whether independent witnessing is required in the contract or inspection plan. A capable manufacturer should also be able to accommodate customer, consultant or third-party inspection when this is agreed before production and testing.
02 Should I ask which circuit breaker and protection relay brands are used?
Yes. Major component selection affects reliability, technical compatibility, replacement cost and long-term spare-parts availability. Ask the manufacturer to identify the proposed breaker, protection relay, meter, contactor and other critical component brands and model families in the technical offer. Any approved alternatives or substitutions should also be clearly defined before production begins.
03 What should a proper switchgear FAT report include?
The FAT report should follow the approved inspection and test plan, project specification and applicable switchgear standard. Depending on the equipment, it may document routine dielectric tests, mechanical operation, interlocks, control wiring verification, protection and control functions, indication and metering checks, communication tests and visual inspection. Results, acceptance criteria, instrument details, test dates and signatures should be recorded rather than providing only a simple checklist.
04 Can I request a sample FAT report before placing an order?
Yes. A sample or anonymized FAT report from a comparable switchgear project can help you evaluate the manufacturer's testing process, documentation quality and level of traceability before awarding the order. Confidential customer information may need to be removed, but the sample should still show the test structure, recorded results, acceptance criteria and sign-off process used by the factory.
